A Rage in Harlem by Chester Himes
Himes is funny, violent and slightly surreal. Elegant noir felt wrong, so the gun and oversized title became one loud piece of slightly deranged typography against a deep brown.

I wanted Baldwin’s books to feel related without turning them into a uniform: black-and-white photography, strong colour, contrasting textures and a folded half dust jacket.

Kōbō Abe’s Inter Ice Age 4
Abe wrote this in 1959: an intelligent computer, climate catastrophe, genetic engineering. I used a period photograph of SEAC to show where our present began.

The eye is one of the first things our brain looks for. Distort it even slightly, and something immediately feels wrong. I built the whole cover around that reflex.

Khoury’s novel is made of memory, displacement and fragments. I treated the photographs the same way: cut, shifted and interrupted, as if memory refused to stay still.

Each cover of Susan Sontag’s essays features a fragment of the text. I wanted the books to be inexpensive but distinctive, so I used simple printing on beautiful coloured stock.

Wielgosz writes about catastrophe not as an ending but as a political opening. I used an 1879 image of the Tay Bridge disaster and let colour and type stir things up.

I'm a sucker for fancy, high-quality coloured paper, and I was so happy to combine it with bespoke calligraphy by a Krakow-based Japanese artist on the covers of this series!

Babel: twenty major world languages
Everyone adores kittens. I dug out a 19th-century illustration of a fiery little cat. Cute on its own, when repeated twenty times, it adds a bit of old-fashioned charm to the cover.

A limited edition of Kapuściński’s best-known books. I treated the series as one graphic system, using a restricted palette and bold geometry to hold very different titles together.
