I never read Angels as a novel about despair, although almost everything in it seems to point that way. Johnson writes about people making spectacularly bad decisions, but does it with an almost unbearable tenderness and empathy.
I wanted the cover to carry both things at once: speed, danger and something unexpectedly fragile. The typography borrows from road signs, a heartbeat line runs through it, and the tiny photograph refers to the novel’s final scene. The whole thing is meant to feel slightly out of control, but still alive.
