And. On Poetry and the Senses

Julia Fiedorczuk writes about poetry as a way of experiencing the world, and about poetry and the senses as two sources that may let us experience more, perhaps live more fully. I wanted to show two elements coming together as one whole. A closed whole, perhaps, while Julia’s essay encourages us to step outside and open up, so in that sense the design may go against the grain of the text. But the circle is a perfect form, containing everything, and that was where I started.

Then I let whatever came my way seep in. The final image is an unlikely marriage of the first edition of Seamus Heaney’s North and a symbol by Tsunehisa Kimura from a May 1966 calendar. I never know what will stick to what.
