A monument. A seminal book on the Vietnam War, and perhaps THE book on war, full stop. Hypnotic, trance-like, chilling and almost unimaginably cruel, Dispatches posed a peculiar problem: the Vietnam War produced so many extraordinary photographs that choosing one felt almost impossible. I also wanted to avoid turning pain and suffering into something beautiful. So, after weeks spent looking for something less obvious, I went back to the very first photograph I had found: a mesmerising portrait of a young American soldier.
I tried several typographic versions, including one with the title and author’s name running across his cheeks, almost like war paint. In the end I did less. I repeated the title on all three sides of the cover and left the photograph untouched, to speak for itself.
